The principal Secretary State Department for Trade, Dr Chris Kiptoo is now decrying the uncertainty in Kenyan politics which has slowed down the economic development in Kenya.

Speaking to Africa Classifieds, Dr Kiptoo expressed that the tireless efforts by the government to create a good trading environment with the rest of the world are rendered futile with the current political status.

Kiptoo is calling upon the Kenyans to uphold peace as we head to presidential repeat polls in a bid to ensure that investors are lured to capitalize in the country.

“Extended political cycle in Kenya is creating uncertainty which is scaring our investors. This is affecting trade and investment in Kenya, despite our efforts to attract financiers,” Kiptoo said.

The Principal Secretary in the Kenyan Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives added that in the past three years, the Kenyan government has struggled to reach over one hundred countries in Africa and the rest of the world looking for the markets to sell its products. He cited the duty-free market access between Kenya and Europe which resulted after the two countries signed the economic partnership agreement.

Dr. Kiptoo also said that with the introduction of the devolved system of governance, Kenya had great hopes to hike production in counties and saw the need to look for markets but now the indicators of the current political status in Kenya are reading negative impact in businesses and other developments which are eyed to promote the economic state of Kenya.

He is calling for peace before, during and after the presidential repeat polls which the PS says it will consume over Kenya Shillings 17 billion taxpayer’s money.

“The revenue has gone down over slowdown in economic activities. Every County in Kenya is now demanding more revenue allocation for their developments,” he added.

Kenya is among leading African countries in terms of development. It is rated number three in sub-Saharan Africa and is holding the eighth position in the African continent. It is the only country in East Africa categorized as the developing nation.

A suspect believed to be an important Al Shabaab facilitator was summoned to court on Tuesday charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit a terrorist act and giving support to a terrorist organization.

Appearing before Nairobi senior judge Magistrate Helen Onkwani, Francis Macharia Karishu denied the charges and was detained pending determination of his bond terms on Thursday.

The accused is alleged to have conspired to stage a terror attack in Nairobi using a vehicle borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) that was nabbed in Merti, Isiolo County on February 15 this year.

The court heard that Karishu supported the Al-Shabaab militia group by making a forged Kenya National Identity card bearing the names of Al Shabaab members, Jirma Huka Galgalo, who is now deceased. Was also charged with forging the same ID’s.

Karishu, who was arrested in Kayole area, is alleged to have committed the charges on or before February 15, 2018 in Nairobi Central Business District.

The prosecution opposed Karishu’s release on grounds that he is facing serious charges and is therefore likely to abscond trial.

His lawyer objected the application opposing bond, but requested the court to grant him more time to go through the affidavit in order to make a proper response.

The court further heard that Karishu’s three associates Abdimajit Hassan Adan, Mohammed Osman Nane and Anthony Kitila Makau have already been arrested and charged.

The said vehicle-borne improvised explosive device was nabbed by police officers who were on patrol in Merti, Isiolo.

On approaching the vehicle, the occupants started firing at the police who returned fire killing one of the occupants.

During the shootout, some of the other occupants attempted to escape but police managed to arrest Adan and Nane (mentioned above) at the scene.

Upon searching the said vehicle, 5 AK47 riffles with 36 fully loaded magazines, 36 unprimed hand grenades, 7 projectile bombs-84mm, 40Kgs pipe bomb and a hotel room key for a hotel in Ngara area, Nairobi were recovered.

The case will be mentioned on May 24, 2018 for bond argument and consolidation with the other files.

The police had put a Ksh.1 million bounty on Karishu’s head.
